Introduction
I've been trying for some time to find a way to work around my schedule, to offer some sort of "a class" at the parish.
Evenings have proven difficult because:
Monday evenings are devoted to our bigger committee meetings:
1st Monday - Liturgy Committee
2nd Monday - Consejo Hispano
3rd Monday - Pastoral Leadership Council
4th Monday - Finance Board
Tuesday evenings - Spanish Mass followed by Exposition / Benedication and Confessions
Wednesday evenings - My one evening / week to meet with Marriage Prep Couples and Families for Quinceaneras
Thursday evenings - Spanish Mass followed by Confessions (generally but not always taken by Fr. David)
Friday evenings - Outside of Lent are generally my day off.
Further, while the mornings can work, they necessarily eliminate participation of our working-age population.
So ... meeting as a group, we decided to ask our two English language Deacons to offer a class either in the during the Day or in the Evening in English, and our Spanish prefering Deacons have been tasked with accompanying more the various Spanish language groups that meet during the Evenings.
Fr. Sebastian is already responsible for the Indonesian Masses, helping with Confirmation and leading the Youth Group.
That leaves me with the question of what I would do in terms of adult faith formation.
So those who know me from my my celebration of Daily Masses would know that I do really like the Saints.
I thought then to create a simple blog to give a once a week reflection on the Saints that come up in the Liturgical Calendar for the week.
I like the Saints because they remind us that the Church has been around for 2000 years, and has existed, and thrived under all kinds of circumstances, offering us much to learn and a good deal of encouragement in times of difficulty.
So rather than feel depressed that our time is lacking in one way or another, I do believe that we can take solace from the examples of the saints who often lived in less than ideal times as well, but found a way to work on, proclaiming the Gospel to the people of their time, and in their circumstances.
And that will be my goal here, to offer us, weekly, examples of creativity and faith, of those brothers and sisters in Christ who went before us.
May God bless us all, and may we ever appreciate that we are not alone. As we say, "where there is a will, there is a way!"
Fr. Dennis
